Moving an Older Person in London, UK: Access and Parking

Planning a move for an older person in London, UK: parking bay suspensions, leasehold flats, lifts, stairs and access, and how to plan the day.

A row of London terraced houses with steps up to the front doors.

Short answer: a move in London, UK, is usually about access. Parking, narrow streets, stairs, lifts and building rules shape the day more than the distance does, so plan them early and book anything that needs notice, such as a parking suspension or a lift, well ahead.

Parking and the removals van

Many London streets have controlled parking zones, double yellow lines or permit bays, and a removals vehicle needs to stop close to the door. In most boroughs the local council can suspend a bay for a removal if you apply in advance, and the notice period and fee differ by borough. Contact your council, which you can find on GOV.UK, as soon as you have a date. A removals company can often advise on this, so ask who is arranging it.

Flats, lifts and stairs

Many older people in London live in flats or converted houses.

  • Leasehold flats. Ask the managing agent or freeholder about permitted moving hours, lift booking, floor and wall protection, and any deposit or fee. Some buildings restrict moves to certain days.
  • Lifts. Check the size and weight limit of the lift, and book it for the full day if you can.
  • Stairs. Victorian conversions often have steep or narrow stairs. Tell your removals company early so they can plan the team and the order of the day.
  • Long carries. If the vehicle cannot stop close to the entrance, allow extra time.

Congestion and other charges

Some London routes carry road charges for certain vehicles. Ask your removals company whether any apply to your move, and who pays, so there are no surprises on the quote.

Moving out of London

Many older Londoners move closer to family, to the coast or into retirement housing elsewhere. If you are selling, coordinate completion dates with your solicitor and estate agent so the removal falls on a day that works at both ends. Our guides to moving closer to family and selling your home to relocate cover the timeline.

Moving within London

If you are downsizing to a smaller flat, measure the new space before you decide what to keep. Our guide to planning furniture for a smaller home helps with this.
