Short answer: start with the least emotional rooms, work in short sessions, let your parent make the decisions, and keep photographs and sentimental items until the end. Rushing the job is the most common reason it goes badly.
A simple approach that works
- Agree the goal. Decide where your parent is moving and what will fit there. That gives every decision a purpose.
- Start with spare rooms, garage and loft. These are lower stakes and build confidence.
- Use four piles: keep, sell or pass to family, donate, let go.
- Work in short sessions. Two or three hours at a time is easier than a whole weekend.
- Leave sentimental items for last. They need time. Our guide to sentimental belongings when downsizing shows how to approach them without pressure.
Keep it respectful
It is your parent's home and their belongings. Offer choices, never take over, and do not remove anything without their agreement. If family are divided on what to keep, agree a way to share things fairly before you begin.
When to ask for help
If the house is large, the timescale is short, or distance makes it hard to be there, hands-on help makes a big difference. Our decluttering and sorting service works room by room at your parent's pace, and our guide to moving a parent covers the wider picture for families.
A Discovery Consultation, £150, gives you a sorting plan and timeline. Declutter support is included in Silver Comfort, from £1,850.
