Short answer: storage lets you move out of one home and into the next on different dates, or keep furniture that will not fit a smaller home, without rushing either decision. In the UK it is most often used for a few weeks between a sale and a purchase.
When storage helps
- Completion dates differ. You sell on one day and buy on another.
- The new home is smaller. You are not yet sure what will fit. Our downsizing checklist helps you decide what to keep.
- Work is not finished. Decorating or repairs at the new home are still going on.
- You are between homes, for example while staying with family or renting short term.
Questions to ask a storage provider
- How long is the minimum term, and what notice do I need to give?
- Is the unit secure, and who can access it?
- What insurance applies to my belongings in storage, and what must I arrange myself?
- Is the unit suitable for furniture, and is it dry and clean?
- Who moves my belongings in and out?
How to prepare
Pack carefully, label each box with its contents and destination room, and keep a list of what is stored. Our packing guide explains how to label so unpacking is faster. Keep documents, medication, valuables and a first night box with you.
