Short answer: for a retirement flat, find out the moving-in rules early, measure every room, decide what fits, and plan the removal around the building's access and timings. A checklist spread over six to eight weeks keeps it calm.
Eight to six weeks before
- Confirm your move-in date in writing and ask the building about moving-in rules: delivery windows, lift booking and parking.
- Get floor plans or measure each room, and decide which large furniture will fit.
- Start sorting into keep, sell, donate and let go. Our downsizing checklist helps.
Four to two weeks before
- Book your removal and confirm the insurance details in writing.
- Pack non-essentials and label boxes by destination room.
- Notify your bank, GP and other services of your new address, and arrange Royal Mail redirection.
- Tell the building about any large deliveries.
The final week
- Pack a first-night box with a kettle, medication, chargers, bedding and toiletries.
- Confirm access and timings with the removal team and the building.
- Take meter readings at the old property.
Moving day and settling in
Do a final walk round the old home, check the new keys, and make the bed first so you can rest. Our guide to settling in after your move has simple ideas for the first weeks, and the full UK moving checklist covers every step.
We help older people move into retirement villages, apartments and bungalows across the UK, including sorting, packing and setting up the new home. We do not recommend or sell retirement properties, so the choice stays with you.
